Relay for life at Virginia Tech

The story behind the video...

Virginia Tech has the largest collegiate Relay for Life in the world. This year alone we raised $505,935.49. It’s not just the amount of money we raise that makes us stand out but the atmosphere that Relay for Life has at Virginia Tech. Walking the silent lap around the drill field is always really emotional for everyone there. When you look around during those few minutes of silence, you see Hokies leaning on each other for support. It’s beautiful to see a community support each other in such a powerful way. The bond that all Hokies share at this event is unmatched anywhere in the world and is what makes me truly proud to call myself a Hokie.

This is why when the Student Alumni Association asked me to help make a video for a fellow student who has cancer, I did not hesitate to say yes. Little did I know that it would spiral into a major production. The video gave me the opportunity to film a bunch of amazing Hokies including the president of Virginia Tech, Dr. Sands.

I found out halfway through filming that the video would also be shown during the spirit rally on the main stage at Relay for Life. Never before have I had the chance to see a video that I produced be shown in front of a large audience. I felt proud to be able to give back to the Virginia Tech community and help a fantastic group of Hokies make a video for a friend.

The video would not have been possible without the help of Allison Crandell, who spearheaded the entire production. Her dedication to this video was what made filming a truly incredible experience. I would also like to thank Elizabeth Galbreath for once again, proving she is one of the best Hokies at Virgnia Tech. Without you guys, none of this would have been possible.

I received a thank you letter from SAA along with a couple of other goodies for helping with the video, but honestly, I want to thank them. Everyone I worked with went above and beyond for this video, and it was a privilege to be able to work with you all. So thank you for the opportunity to help with a project that was so near to your hearts, it was an honor.
